THE HISTORICAL BUILDING COMPANY THAT BOASTS MORE THAN A CENTURY OF ACTIVITY IN CERNOBBIO

Mondelli Battista is a company with ancient roots, deeply linked to a territory, that of the lake, which has contributed to transform, preserve and renew the construction company. Founded in 1880 by the mason and master builder Battista Mondelli, the company began its activity in Piazza Santo Stefano, today a neighborhood of Cernobbio, where the first works were made (Villa Vanda) and where the company has its first headquarters. The twentieth century, when the company entered its second generation of Mondelli, is marked by important technological innovations: reinforced concrete appears and floors begin to be built with iron beams or bricks and cement. This is a real revolution for the construction world. The company immediately understood what is essential to keep up with the times. Investing in tools and innovation, in the years 1920 to 1940, the company expanded a lot, becoming one of the most important in the province.

The first works: from the reconstruction of the dome of the Duomo to the Arena of the Teatro Sociale

It is in these years that the company provides Como with the first tangible and important evidence of its passion for buildings and construction: it participates in the remaking of the dome of the Duomo, constructs the cover of the river Cosia and the connected hydraulic system, and surely one of the most impressive engineering works of the time, constructs the Arena of the Teatro Sociale, Casa Cattaneo in Cernobbio, participates in the renovation of the Como-Brunate funicular and the enlargement works of Viale Geno.

Between the two wars: great works for the industrial sector

The years between the two world wars are also the years of the first industrial boom: the company works for large textile and mechanical companies in the area, including Tessitura Bernasconi in Cernobbio and Officine Carcano in Maslianico. In recent years the company does not only operate in Como, but also leaves important traces in South Tyrol including: the Merano racecourse, the Val d'Ega dam and the Silandro barracks. The post-war period marks the return to a more Como-like vocation. In 1952 Mondelli returned to take care of the Duomo by redoing all the roofing structures: a large work, which involves replacing the old wooden beams with a new reinforced concrete structure. Also in Como the company constructs the modern wing that houses the offices of the Municipality, behind Palazzo Cernezzi.

Historic villas on Lake Como

During these years an ancient and prestigious tradition is consolidated: the expansion and arrangement of the historic villas on the lake and the construction of new villas for the new rising middle class. Mondelli Battista has an important role in the works that gave the Lario that unique charm, envied around the world and loved to the point of attracting to the lake the likes of Hollywood's George Clooney. Surely the beautiful names of cinema, music and fashion have had the opportunity to appreciate the work done, for example, at Villa Fontanelle, the residence of Moltrasio of the Versace family, or even the works of expansion and accommodation of the Grand Hotel Villa d 'Este. The prestigious residences on the lake that have been renovated thanks to the work of the company are many: Villa Pizzo, Villa Gallietta, Villa Dozzio, Villa Pisa, Villa Allamel and Villa Erba

The post-World War II innovation

The post-war period also marks a new generational shift: the company passed to the third generation Mondelli, and the same, in 1954, decided to move the headquarters of Piazza Santo Stefano to the center of the capital city, Via Rodari. In these years the technologies changed once again: the vehicles are transported on trucks, the first cranes and the first bulldozers can be seen on the construction sites, we are witnessing a second building revolution.

From the eighties to today

In the second half of the eighties, the fourth generation took over the leadership of the company, which is still at the head of the company today. Mondelli's expertise ranges in various fields, but once again its signature is left on the shores of the lake with the renovation of Villa Semperverde in Moltrasio, for which it received the Maestri Cumacini award in 1994. The Mondelli Company continues to expand operations for both private and public clients, realizing real estate complexes, schools, infrastructures, buildings for social assistance works, villas, operating interventions to recover the historical and urban heritage both in the Como area and in the canturino. Over 130 years of history, started with the optimism of a self-made construction worker and continued thanks to the passion of four generations of a family that has left its mark on the Lario and beyond. Solid tradition and experience and always being ready to welcome technological innovations, the company is ready to accept the challenge of the future, because the "future has ancient roots".
